Vienna’s Danube Island Festival: The biggest free open-air party in Europe

The Danube Island in Vienna is to be the venue for Europe's biggest open-air party with free entry for the twenty-sixth time. The extraordinary Russian-Balkan-Ska formation “Russkaya" is as much a part of the party this year as Austro pop-rockers Wolfgang Ambros and Joesi Prokopetz, EAV, cabarettists Alfred Dorfer and Alf Poier as well as the musical troupe of United Stages Vienna. In total, some 2,000 artists and up to 3 million visitors are expected to attend this unique open-air spectacle.

This year, the three-day mega fête – which is also dubbed the most peaceful festival in Europe – is dedicated entirely to international pop and rock music. Over 300 music, theater and cabaret groups will be offering around 600 hours of live performances on 21 themed islands and 13 stages .

A diverse program will be offered on the 4.5 km long festival site , with something for everybody: from rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic, jazz, blues, world music, Viennese songs and country to cabaret. An action-packed entertainment program for children will run throughout the festival.

A wide range of culinary delights and accompanying drinks will be offered at the 250 catering stands – from juicy steaks and crispy grilled chicken to freshly drawn beer and cool cocktails.

Come to visit "The best zoo in Europe" in Vienna

Schönbrunn Zoo emerged as the best zoo in Europe in an independent study carried out in 2009, which compared 40 zoos in 16 countries. The world’s oldest zoo is also its most modern – and now has the added attraction of a new orangutan house.

The former imperial orangery was converted into a paradise for the red-haired primates, the orangutans: Where exotic plants and citrus fruits once spent the winter, apes now play in climbing trees, on nets and ropes. And they can be proud of their new home, because the zoo has been named the best in Europe.

The shaggy orangutans swing through the air eleven meters up. This is equivalent to their natural habitat in the forest canopy and they definitely prefer it. The redesigned orangery provides the apes with a 750 m2 outdoor enclosure with climbing trees, nets and ropes. It is also possible for visitors to watch the behaviors of the great apes from close up.

The zoo’s information center provides information both on the evolutionary history of the great apes and also on their lives and the dangers they face. At Café Nonja, named after a special artist, the orangutan female “Nonja”, visitors to the zoo are treated to Asian delicacies. Pictures of Nonja are also on display here.

Musical and Dance :: “Rudolf – Affaire Mayerling”

This new historical musical tells the tragic tale of the life of Crown Prince Rudolf and his love of Mary Vetsera. The show is in German but is still a great night out even if you don’t speak the language — the music and acting tell the story.

Crown Prince Rudolf was the right man at the right time and place — a visionary whose ideas could have transformed the ossified Habsburg Empire. He was driven by passion, idealism and courage, but lacked political talent. His ardor could have ushered in a new age, but his opponents were able to thwart all his reforms. Finally Rudolf met the love of his life, Mary Vetsera. Her refusal to compromise gave him the strength to take the final journey to Mayerling, “united in love until death”.

The cast promises an outstanding production, with top musical star Uwe Kröger, Wietske van Tongeren, Carin Filipcic (all acclaimed for their roles in “Rebecca“ at the Raimund Theater), Claus Dam and Drew Sarich on the bill. The script was inspired by Frederik Morton’s novel “A Nervous Splendor”, and the score is by “Jekyll & Hyde” composer Frank Wildhorn.

The musical was premiered in Hungarian at the Budapest Operettszinhasz in 2006, and was staged at the Szeged open air festival during the summer of the same year. Now “Rudolf” is finally coming to Vienna’s Raimund Theater in a German language version.

Vienna Festival 2009 with Kafka, Kleist and Shakespeare

Artistic variety is the key: The spectacular open-air opening on the Rathausplatz on 8 May is followed until 14 June by 178 performances from 28 countries – opera, concerts, theatre, dance, shows and an exhibition.

Major artists will once again be at the festival, including Bruno Beltrão, Philippe Boesmans, Heiner Goebbels, Christoph Marthaler, Robert Lepage, Alvis Hermanis, Philippe Quesne, Peter Sellars, Peter Stein and Krzysztof Warlikowski. Through their works they show that music, theatre and performance are spiritual places that not only take one’s mind off things, but stir up fantasy.

Amongst the top-class names on the programme of plays are Peter Stein’s Berlin production of Kleist’s “Der zerbrochene Krug” with Klaus Maria Brandauer, which is coming to the Theater an der Wien as a guest performance. At the Theater Akzent, you can experience Shakespeare’s “Othello”, directed by Peter Sellars. Andreas Kriegenburg’s hit production of “Der Prozess” after Franz Kafka will play at the Volkstheater and Jürgen Gosch’s “Uncle Vanya” after Anton Chekov in Hall E in the MuseumsQuartier.

The music programme is devoted to Aeneas, who cannot tell Dido the reasons for his departure and his change in mood: “Dido and Aeneas” by Henry Purcell in the production by Deborah Warner, the Austrian premiere of Philippe Boesmans’ “Yvonne, die Burgunderprinzessin” and Heiner Goebbel’s “I went to the house but did not enter”.

“Into the City”, “Forum Festwochen”, the exhibition “Ich bin ganz wo anders – Jam krejt dikund tjeter” and the film series “Die Filme von Wassili Schuschkin” complete the offering.

The global financial crisis has intensified in 2008, becoming an area of increasing international concern. The effects of various rescue plans being implemented are yet to be known.

Life Ball 2009

The Vienna Life Ball – Europe's most extravagant AIDS charity event – will present spectacular outfits, an extra-classy fashion show and cool beats on May 16.

Vienna ha messo on-line la nuova pubblicitá che verrá mandata in onda su CNN per 342 volte nei prossimi due mesi.

Inoltre a Parigi il filmato sarà proiettato nelle sale di 121 cinema dal 1 al 14 Aprile...si ipotizzano ca 310.000 persone che lo vedranno.

Sempre nella capitale francese ci saranno le pubblicitá su Vienna su 250 Taxi e 12 Bus; a Milano e Roma saranno "addobbati" invece 4 Bus e 3 Tram.

Maria Lassnig al MUMOK

Maria Lassnig è una delle più significative artiste contemporanee. Il Museo d’Arte Moderna MUMOK le dedica, in occasione del suo 90.esimo compleanno, una grande rassegna personale dal titolo “Il nono decennio“ che punta i riflettori soprattutto sui dipinti e sui disegni realizzati dall’artista negli ultimi dieci anni.

Maria Lassnig ha sempre rivestito il ruolo di avanguardista ed anticipatrice di future tendenze per le successive generazioni di artisti, influenzando in questo modo decisivamente il loro sviluppo artistico. Agli inizi degli anni Cinquanta si dedicò con particolare attenzione all’arte informale che la portò a porre la rappresentazione del corpo umano al centro del suo lavoro. Il suo operato si concentra soprattutto sullo studio delle sensazioni fisiche attraverso gli strumenti della pittura; l’artista utilizza per i suoi autoritratti, ritratti e nature morte il concetto di “body awareness“: “Una cosa è certa, io non dipingo l’”oggetto” corpo, ma dipingo le sensazioni del corpo.“ (Maria Lassnig, 1999).

Sono stati conferiti all’artista numerosi premi ed onorificenze per il suo intero operato artistico, tra cui il riconoscimento dello Stato Austriaco “Grosser Oesterreichischer Staatspreis“ (nel 1988 la Lassnig è stata la prima artista ad esserne insignita), il Premio Oskar Kokoschka (1998) ed il Premio Max Beckmann della città di Francoforte sul Meno (2004).

“L’epoca di Rembrandt“ all’Albertina

L’arte fiamminga del 17esimo secolo è al centro della nuova mostra proposta dall’Albertina di Vienna.
La rassegna presenta 140 capolavori di arte fiamminga del 17esimo secolo, realizzati da 60 diversi artisti tra cui Hendrick Goltzius, Rembrandt van Rijn, Aert van der Neer, Aelbert Cuyp, Adriaen van Ostade e molti altri; le opere fanno parte della collezione permanente dell’Albertina. L’esposizione è incentrata intorno all’operato di Rembrandt, con la sua eterogeneità tecnica e tematica ed il suo inconfondibile carattere.

Integrano le opere della collezione dell’Albertina 30 tele ad olio, in sintonia con l’argomento della mostra e prese in prestito da diverse raccolte internazionali. Dal punto di vista tematico i soggetti previsti comprendono paesaggi, topografie, marine, vedute ispirate all’Italia, ma anche ritratti, scene di genere e nature morte.

Anish Kapoor al MAK

Per la prima volta a Vienna le opere di Anish Kapoor, uno dei maggiori rappresentanti della British Sculpture e vincitore del premio Turner. Nell’ambito della mostra “Shooting into the corner” il MAK, Museo d’Arte Applicata e Contemporanea, presenta quattro imponenti opere di cera, tre delle quali concepite appositamente per quest’esposizione

Anish Kapoor è nato a Bombay nel 1954. Fin dai primi anni della sua attività, l'artista ha creato molteplici sculture con materiali diversi quali pietra, acciaio e vetro. Le opere oggetto della mostra "Shooting into the Corner" presentano uno spaccato della sua attività più recente. Dal 2000 questo artista lavora prevalentemente con la cera, che egli fa produrre espressamente per le sue opere. La particolare colorazione viene ottenuta dall'artista aggiungendo pigmenti di colore.

CURIOSITÀ:
Il pezzo forte di questa mostra viennese è sicuramente l'opera "Shooting into the Corner, 2008/2009", esposta nella sala centrale del MAK. Si tratta di un work in progress, un'opera, cioè, che si forma nel corso dell’esposizione stessa: l'impasto di cera viene gettato con un'apposita catapulta sulle pareti del padiglione alla velocità di circa 50 km all'ora. In questo modo, la massa dell’opera aumenta continuamente ed il peso finale di questa scultura al termine dell’esposizione sarà di 20 tonnellate.

Ristorante tipico ADLERHOF

Dopo le pizzerie dell`ultimo post, non poteva mancare uno dei ristoranti secondo me più "old style" di Vienna... ADLERHOF

Si tratta di un ristorante dove sembra essersi fermato il tempo; tutto infatti si ripropone come 50 anni fa, a partire dal frigorifero ricavato nel muro, le pareti che hanno perso un pó il colore, i bagni di un`altra epoca, tutti i giornali sparsi in giro, etc...

Il proprietario é un simpatico signore ungherese di ca 85 anni, trasferitosi a Vienna nel `56, durante la rivoluzione d`ungheria.

La cucina é veramente ottima - con una scelta mista di piatti ungheresi, austriaci e dei paesi limitrofi. Porzioni abbondanti ed un paio di buone birre sono gli ingredienti per un´ottima cena!

Da segnalare anche la musica Jazz in sottofondo e la proiezione delle partite di calcio più importanti.

Edward Hopper alla Kunsthalle

Edward Hopper è considerato uno degli esponenti più importanti della pittura americana del 20° secolo e ha inspirato un’intera generazione di cineasti e scrittori. La Kunsthalle Wien presenta il pittore nell’ambito di un dialogo con l’arte contemporanea.

„Western Motel. Edward Hopper e l’arte contemporanea“: è così chiamato il confronto nell’ambito del quale, oltre ad una vasta scelta di quadri di Hopper, si potranno vedere anche opere di Mark Lewis, Jim Jarmusch e David Claerbout.

Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967) amava i viaggi, il cinema ed il teatro. Di conseguenza la sua opera è espressione di narrazione. I suoi temi ruotano intorno all’esistenza umana in diverse variazioni e astrazioni. Il momento filmico dà ai suoi quadri l’aspetto di un’istantanea distaccata dallo spazio e dal tempo, come se un film si fosse fermato arbitrariamente. Ne rimangono solitudine, isolamento e voyeurismo. Con una scelta di dipinti, acqueforti e disegni la Kunsthalle Wien fa luce sui legami di Hopper con l’arte contemporanea.

New Year's Concert 2010 under Georges Prêtre

The Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2010 will be conducted for the second time by the French conductor Georges Prêtre. Philharmonic Chairman Clemens Hellsberg stated that the decision was made "in recognition of our many years of collaboration and Prêtre's extensive experience with this genre." The success of Prêtre's debut at the New Year's Concert 2008 "was for both conductor and orchestra very gratifying."

Georges Prêtre has been honored several times for his artistic achievements in his home country and also in Austria. In 2004 he was named a Commander of the French Foreign Legion and in the same year was awarded the Austrian Honorary Cross for Science and the Arts, 1st Class.

Since 1987 the conductors of the New Year's Concert have alternated yearly. Herbert von Karajan conducted in 1987, followed by Claudio Abbado (1988 and 1991), Carlos Kleiber (1989 and 1992), Zubin Mehta (1990, 1995, 1998, 2007), Riccardo Muti (1993, 1997, 2000, 2004), Lorin Maazel (1994, 1996, 1999, 2005), Seiji Ozawa (2002), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (2001, 2003), Mariss Jansons (2006), Georges Prêtre (2008) and Daniel Barenboim (2009). In 2010 Prêtre returns to the podium of the New Year's Concert for the second time.

„Der unbekannte Hundertwasser“

In occasione dell’80esimo anniversario della nascita dell’artista austriaco, deceduto nel 2000, il Kunsthaus Wien (1030, Untere Weissgerberstrasse 13, www.kunsthauswien.at) allestisce dal 20 novembre 2008 al 15 marzo 2009 la mostra “Der unbekannte Hundertwasser“. Dipinti, modelli architettonici e fotografie dell’artista verranno presentati per la prima volta in occasione di questa rassegna, essi costruiranno un ponte tra le opere del primo periodo e quelle degli ultimi anni. Hundertwasser è l’autore della decorazione di un boeing 757, ma anche del rivestimento di un termovalorizzatore nell’area Spittelau di Vienna. Egli sistemò persino una riproduzione del suo caratteristico cappellino con visiera sull’edificio.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser ha lasciato ai posteri un vasto operato. Numerosi suoi lavori si trovano al Kunsthaus di Vienna, altri fanno parte di raccolte private. Il Kunsthaus presenta tele e disegni che Hundertwasser realizzò quand’era ancora ragazzo, ed altri insoliti oggetti tra cui un accappatoio per il pugile Henry Maske, fotografie di una ragazza dal corpo ricoperto di ornamenti pittorici e le decorazioni per un boeing 757. Il suo stile è inconfondibile e si distingue per un’intensa policromaticità in contrasto con il bianco e il nero, e per le variopinte spirali con cui vengono illuminate le varie superfici.

Hundertwasser lasciò dei segni indelebili nella sua città di nascita: il suo debutto architettonico avvenne nel 1985 a Vienna con la cosiddetta Casa di Hundertwasser, un edificio abitativo all’indirizzo Löwengasse: si tratta di un coloratissimo palazzo con pavimenti e pareti inclinati, terrazzi e tetti ricoperti di vegetazione che affascina ogni anno numerosissimi visitatori. Nel 1990 fu realizzato il suo Kunsthaus e nel 1992 fu ultimato il termovalorizzatore di Wien Spittelau. All'interno del Kunsthaus si trova una mostra permanente che permette di conoscere l’operato dell’artista.
